Audio-Technica has announced the release of two modern on-camera shotgun microphones, the ATV-SG1 and ATV-SG1LE, designed for videographers and content creators. The new microphones aim to provide high-quality audio capture directly to cameras, addressing a growing necessitate for improved sound in increasingly popular video content creation.

Both models feature Audio-Technica’s classic 20 Series solid mesh design and incorporate a newly designed 14mm large-diameter diaphragm to deliver natural, high-resolution sound. A 100mm long, highly directional acoustic tube focuses on the sound source whereas minimizing unwanted background noise. An integrated shock mount is also included to reduce handling noise caused by camera movement and vibration.

Common features across both microphones include Audio-Technica’s patented noise immunity technology, which is effective against hum and RF noise from electronic devices like smartphones. They also both include a 12-sided shoe mounting plate allowing for 30-degree rotational adjustments, and a wind muff to reduce wind noise during outdoor recordings.

The ATV-SG1LE connects directly to compatible cameras – such as DSLRs and mirrorless SLR cameras – via a 3.5mm TRS-to-TRS cable. Unlike some plug-in microphones that compromise performance for convenience, the ATV-SG1LE utilizes a unique plug-in power circuit to maintain the characteristics of a battery-powered microphone, including a wide frequency response and high maximum SPL. It measures 35mm wide and 127.1mm in length and is priced at 85 pounds.

The ATV-SG1 offers additional features geared towards professional videographers. A low-cut filter switch reduces low-frequency noise from sources like wind, traffic, and air conditioning. A stepless gain adjustment knob on the rear allows for real-time gain control. A safety track function simultaneously records the main audio to the left channel and a backup track at -6dB to the right channel, ensuring a usable recording even in the event of unexpected volume spikes.

The ATV-SG1 also features an external input jack and accessory shoe, enabling the attachment of a wireless lavalier microphone receiver or a wired lavalier microphone for simultaneous recording with the shotgun mic. Real-time monitoring is supported via a headphone jack with volume control. While the ATV-SG1LE receives power from the camera, the ATV-SG1 is powered by a USB-chargeable internal battery, providing up to 24 hours of continuous leverage. It is priced at 175 pounds.
