Australia Floods: Bodies Found & Crocodile Warnings

Authorities in Australia are warning residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution following widespread flooding and reports of increased crocodile activity in the north of the country. The warnings come as search efforts continue for missing individuals and after recent tragic incidents involving the reptiles.

Recent heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding, creating conditions where crocodiles can move more freely into areas typically frequented by people. Officials are urging the public to stay out of the water and avoid riverbanks, emphasizing the danger posed by the animals. “Ga alsjeblieft niet zwemmen,” authorities cautioned, as reported by demorgen.be.

The increased risk follows a series of incidents. In early August 2024, human remains were found inside a crocodile in Queensland, believed to be those of 40-year-old tourist David Hogbin, who fell into the Annan River on Saturday, August 3, 2024. According to NOS Nieuws, the crocodile, nearly five meters long, was later killed by rangers who recognized it by a scar on its head. The incident occurred in an area known as “krokodillenbocht” (crocodile bend), a popular spot for tourists hoping to see the reptiles.

This was the third fatal crocodile attack in Australia this year, with 2014 remaining the record year with four deaths. The crocodile population has significantly increased since the 1970s, when it was designated a protected species.

More recently, on October 19, 2025, guests at a hotel in Port Douglas were surprised to find a crocodile in the swimming pool, as reported by nu.nl on Facebook. The incident highlights the potential for crocodiles to venture into unexpected locations during periods of flooding.

Authorities as well confirmed that saltwater crocodiles, which are more aggressive than freshwater species, are prevalent in the northern regions of Australia, with a population exceeding 100,000, according to Nieuwsblad. The ongoing situation underscores the necessitate for vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines in crocodile-inhabited areas.

The increased crocodile presence and the recent flooding events are raising concerns about public safety and the potential for further incidents. The development highlights the challenges of coexisting with wildlife in a region prone to extreme weather events.
