Gas prices in Austria have risen sharply in recent weeks, mirroring increases seen after the start of the war in Ukraine. The surge is linked to the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, adding to global economic pressures.
Many gas stations across Austria significantly increased their prices for gasoline and diesel on Friday, March 21, 2026. Diesel fuel reached a median price of over two euros per liter for the first time since the beginning of the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran.
Stations offering diesel for under two euros per liter are now rare, primarily located near borders with countries where fuel is cheaper.
According to data released Saturday by E-Control, the nationwide median diesel price rose to 2.109 euros, up from 1.969 euros the previous day. The median price for gasoline increased from 1.759 to 1.849 euros.
Since the start of the conflict in Iran, fuel prices have increased by approximately 50 cents. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, the average price of diesel was 1.57 euros per liter, and gasoline cost 1.52 euros per liter.
A similar price spike occurred in early March 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At that time, both gasoline and diesel prices rose by 50 cents within two weeks, reaching a peak of around 1.95 euros for gasoline and just under 2.10 euros for diesel.
Austrian gas stations are now limited to increasing prices only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at noon. Price reductions are permitted at any time. (APA)
