AWS Bahrain Disrupted: Drone Activity Suspected – Second Incident This Month

The cloud infrastructure that underpins much of the modern internet experienced another disruption, potentially impacting service availability in the region. Amazon has been affected by such an incident for the second time this month, this time in Bahrain.

Amazon announced that its Amazon Web Services (AWS) region in Bahrain is experiencing disruptions amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. A company spokesperson confirmed the disruption was due to drone activity in the area.

AWS has not yet detailed the exact status or specific issues with its infrastructure on its website. It remains unclear whether the disruptions resulted from a direct attack on the infrastructure itself, or from activity impacting nearby facilities.

Drone Activity Disrupts AWS Bahrain, Marking Second Incident This Month

This marks the second instance in March where drone activity has impacted the operation of AWS Bahrain. Earlier this month, AWS reported that facilities in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates lost power, with the company working to restore functionality, including migrating computing workloads to other regions.

The previous incident involved several impacts, including:

  • Structural damage,
  • Disruptions to power supply,
  • Fire suppression efforts that led to additional water damage.

The company has not disclosed the extent of the damage this time. Amazon stated it is assisting customers in migrating to alternative AWS regions while working to restore services. “As this situation evolves and – as we have advised before – we request those with workloads in the affected regions continue to migrate to other locations,” Amazon said in a statement Monday.

The company is shifting some workloads to other Amazon Web Services locations and has not provided a timeline for service restoration. AWS is a critical component of Amazon’s business, accounting for nearly three-quarters of its operating income, and supports the operations of numerous client services that are integral to the digital economy.
