The Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española has officially recognized Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known globally as Bad Bunny, for his exceptional contribution to the global reach of the Spanish language.

The institution highlighted that Bad Bunny is currently the most internationally successful creator and performer of popular music.

Through his career, he “has significantly contributed to the notable presence of Spanish in different corners of the world,” according to the Academia. The organization similarly emphasized that the Puerto Rican Spanish dialect is an essential element of the singer’s identity and artistic work.

The resolution also noted that Martínez Ocasio’s cultural project has helped overcome prejudices towards the communicative forms of popular, urban, youth and multilingual speech.
