A new trailer offers a deeper look at Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster, an upcoming 2D action-adventure game aiming to recapture the feel of classic titles like Castlevania and Golden Axe. The game, developed by Dormidin Studio and published by SelectaPlay, is slated for a global digital release in Fall 2026 across PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

Set in the war-torn continent of Arborea, Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster unfolds after the devastating Portal Wars. A fragile peace between various races is threatened as the kingdoms of Imperia and the Sacred Kingdom launch a military campaign against non-human populations. This conflict revives an ancient prophecy foretelling the arrival of a Beastmaster – a warrior capable of uniting the realms of humans, and beasts.

Mystical Transformations and Classic-Inspired Combat

The protagonist, the last Beastmaster, possesses the unique ability to channel the power of mystical creatures. This manifests as transformative abilities that alter combat styles and exploration options. Some transformations enhance physical strength, while others unlock special movements to access hidden areas or overcome environmental obstacles. This feature adds a layer of strategic depth to the gameplay.

The game’s world is designed as an interconnected map in the style of classic Metroidvania titles. Regions are linked, but many areas remain inaccessible until the player acquires new abilities, encouraging continuous exploration and discovery. This design choice aims to create a sense of progression and reward for players as they unlock new powers.

Combat in Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster combines sword attacks, magical abilities, and creature-based powers. Special arenas introduce a shift in perspective, creating more direct and intense encounters with energy bars reminiscent of classic fighting games.

An Independent Project with Retro Roots

The game is the product of a small, independent team comprised of two creators who met at a cosplay event. What began as a shared passion for classic fantasy evolved into an ambitious project aiming to recapture the essence of 90s action games.

To achieve this retro aesthetic, all visual elements have been hand-drawn. Characters, enemies, and environments are crafted from hundreds of detailed illustrations, creating a visually rich world filled with ancient ruins, dark magic, and dangerous creatures. The hand-drawn art style is a deliberate choice to evoke nostalgia for classic 2D games.

The result is an adventure blending platforming, combat, and exploration within a universe inspired by titles like Castlevania, Golden Axe, and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. According to early impressions from outlets like Kotaku, the game strives to capture the spirit of those titles without simply replicating their formulas.

Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch will launch alongside the digital release, with pre-orders available through select retailers. The game is currently available to wishlist on Steam and PlayStation 5, with Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series wishlist pages coming soon.

If the developers can successfully balance its retro aesthetic with solid combat mechanics and a world brimming with secrets, Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster could be a standout title for fans of fantasy and 2D action.
