Basel, Switzerland – The city of Basel launched its annual Fasnacht carnival Monday at 4:00 a.m. Local time with the “Morgenstreich,” a tradition marked by the extinguishing of city lights and a procession of drummers, flutists, and elaborately costumed revelers. The event signals the start of Basel’s three-day carnival, a deeply rooted cultural celebration.

Thousands gathered in the city center as the lights went out, illuminated by the glow of colorful lanterns carried by participants. These lanterns range in size and design, from large parade lanterns to smaller headlamps and those mounted on poles, each displaying unique artwork. The tradition dates back centuries, with the “Morgestraich” melody itself originating as a military signal in the early 18th century, though its roots are believed to be even older.

This year’s Fasnacht appears to be heavily influenced by global political events. Many of the lanterns featured commentary on current affairs, including depictions of former U.S. President Donald Trump and references to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, according to reports from Basler Zeitung.

Participants, known as “Cliquen,” move through the city streets in loosely organized groups, following no predetermined route. Costumes are traditionally varied, ranging from classic “Charivari” outfits to old parade costumes and original fantasy creations. Schweizer Fernsehen reports that mild temperatures and dry weather contributed to a large turnout for the event.

The “Morgenstreich” is not only a visual spectacle but similarly an auditory one, with the distinctive sound of piccolos and drums filling the streets. The traditional march is played twice in succession and is not repeated throughout the rest of the Fasnacht celebration. Telebasel is providing a full program of events for the duration of the Fasnacht.

The Fasnacht celebration underscores Basel’s rich cultural heritage and its continued relevance as a vibrant community event.
