Rumors circulating on Chinese gaming forums suggest PlatinumGames is developing a recent Bayonetta title utilizing Unreal Engine 5. The potential project, reportedly budgeted similarly to Final Fantasy XVI, could be unveiled later in 2026 with a targeted release in early 2028. This news arrives as game developers increasingly adopt Unreal Engine 5 for its advanced graphical capabilities and development tools.
According to the reports, the new Bayonetta game may feature a slightly streamlined combat system designed to broaden its appeal, incorporating Shield Guard and Shield Counter mechanics. The project is said to have completed its research and prototyping phase and is now entering full production following a review by Tencent. One source described the current design as “average.”
Beyond a new installment, the discussions also point to remasters or remakes of both Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. These projects are described as being more substantial than traditional remasters but falling short of full remakes, with planned graphical enhancements and minor gameplay adjustments. A potential release for these titles is projected for 2027.
The reports further claim PlatinumGames has reacquired the rights to the original Bayonetta, potentially paving the way for a re-release of the series across multiple platforms. PlatinumGames, founded in 2007 as a merger between Seeds Inc. And Odd Inc., is known for action-focused titles like Nier: Automata and Bayonetta.
