8 muertos tras ataque israelí al paseo marítimo de Beirut, el peor en la capital del Líbano
An Israeli strike on a beachfront area in Beirut killed eight people and injured 31 others on Thursday, marking the deadliest attack on the Lebanese capital since escalating tensions began more than ten days ago. The attack underscores the growing risk to civilians as conflict expands beyond the traditional areas of fighting.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reported the casualties following the strike on Ramlet al Bayda, a coastal area in central Beirut that has seen an influx of displaced people. According to early reports, the area was hit by a drone strike.
A journalist with the AFP news agency at the scene observed damage to a motorcycle and two cars, with security forces cordoning off the area. Bloodstains were visible on the sidewalk, and a small crater was present in the ground.
“We saw dead people on the ground,” said Aseel Habbaj, a displaced woman who had sought shelter in a nearby tent after fleeing Israeli bombardments elsewhere in Lebanon. “We were all sleeping in my tent when suddenly we heard a noise,” Habbaj told AFP. “We jumped up and went to notice what happened,” before a second strike wounded her husband.
Dalal al-Sayed, 40, a neighbor, explained that she chose to camp by the sea after escaping attacks in southern Lebanon “since the last thing we expected was for Israel to attack Beirut.” Her family could not afford to rent an apartment, she said. “We will not leave, we will stay here even if we die,” she added.
The strike near the sea was the third to hit the heart of the capital since the start of the wider conflict in the Middle East. Displaced people have been sleeping in the open or in tents on the streets of Beirut, including in the coastal area of Ramlet al Bayda, where some shelters were hit by shrapnel from Thursday’s attack, according to the AFP correspondent.
Israel has also repeatedly targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, stating on Thursday that it had struck 10 Hezbollah targets. Additionally on Thursday, attacks on Aramoun, a residential area south of Beirut and outside of Hezbollah’s traditional strongholds, killed three people and injured a child, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
