Belgian wholesale egg prices have reached a record high, according to a decision made Tuesday by the Kruisem pricing commission. The commission set the price of a 62.5-gram brown egg – a market benchmark – at 18.91 cents, a historic level.
The price increase comes as demand for eggs typically rises in the lead-up to Easter, particularly for decorated eggs in countries like Germany. Overall global demand for eggs has been steadily increasing in recent years. The commission, established in 1954 under the impetus of the Ministry of Agriculture, meets every Tuesday morning to determine egg prices through consultations between producers, and traders.
