Belgium Energy Crisis: Prices Soar & Political Responses

Diesel prices in Belgium are nearing €2.30 per liter, while gasoline 95 is averaging €1.86 per liter, nearly a month after the U.S.-Israeli action in Iran. Heating oil, gas and electricity costs have also risen. According to the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, the world could even “experience its worst energy crisis in decades.”

On the political front, Georges-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR party, has proposed a “worker’s index” to counter rising energy prices. The right-leaning parties also favor activating the “reverse ratchet.” Les Engagés, the PS, and the PTB parties, however, are advocating for price caps on fuels and energy. The De Wever government, currently facing budgetary constraints, has yet to make any decisions on these proposals.

To discuss these issues, Sacha Daout will be joined by Marie-Colline Leroy (co-president of Ecolo), Yvan Verougstraete (president of Les Engagés), Paul Magnette (president of the PS), Georges-Louis Bouchez (president of the MR), Daniel Coulonval (president of FWA, the Walloon Federation of Agriculture), Christophe Wambersie (Secretary General of SNI, the Neutral Union for Independents), Adel El Gammal (professor of energy geopolitics at ULB ) and Michael Reul (Secretary General of UPTR, the Union of Road Transport).
