Melbourne, Australia – Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia saw her 2026 Australian Open run end in the first round today, falling to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in a hard-fought, three-set match. The defeat marks a change in fortunes for Haddad Maia, who reached the third round of the tournament last year. Putintseva will advance to face either Elsa Jacquemot or marta Kostyuk as she continues her campaign in Melbourne.

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia fell to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in a thrilling three-set match at the Australian Open today, January 17, 2026. Putintseva secured the victory with a final score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Court 6 in Melbourne.

With the win, Putintseva advances to the second round, where she will face the winner of the match between Elsa Jacquemot (FRA), ranked 60th in the world, and Marta Kostyuk (UKR), ranked 20th. Haddad Maia, who reached the third round in 2025, has been eliminated from the tournament.
