Bigme Teases HiBreak Dual: A First-of-Its-Kind Color E-Ink and LCD Smartphone
Bigme is expanding the boundaries of mobile display technology with the announcement of the Bigme HiBreak Dual, a dual-screen device designed to merge the high-performance capabilities of an LCD with the eye-friendly nature of color E-Ink. By integrating an LCD screen on one side and a color E-Ink display on the other, the company aims to create a versatile tool that caters to both high-intensity multimedia tasks and low-distraction reading.
This hybrid configuration allows users to flip the device based on their needs: using the LCD for richer colors and higher refresh rates, or switching to the high-contrast, low-power E-Ink screen for a simpler experience. While previous dual-screen attempts by manufacturers such as Hisense and YotaPhone utilized grayscale E-Ink, Bigme is positioning the HiBreak Dual as the world’s first smartphone to feature a color E-Ink display in a dual-screen setup.
The inclusion of E-Ink technology offers significant advantages for intentional technology use. Unlike traditional displays, E-Ink does not require active illumination to be visible, allowing users to view content using only ambient light, which reduces direct light exposure to the eyes. The technology is exceptionally energy-efficient; it can display a static image—such as a boarding pass or event ticket—indefinitely, even after the phone has been powered down.
While Bigme has previously entered this niche market with the Hibreak Pro, the HiBreak Dual represents a strategic evolution in display versatility. The company has already begun generating interest through cryptic Reddit comments and a placeholder product page, though official pricing and a specific release date have not yet been announced.
This move highlights Bigme’s continued investment in e-paper innovation throughout 2026. The company also recently unveiled the HiBreak Plus, a color smartphone featuring a 6.13-inch Kaleido 3 e-paper display and stylus support. Scheduled for release on April 20, 2026, with a retail price of $249, the HiBreak Plus further demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing alternatives to traditional smartphone screens.
