Binjai, Indonesia – Officials at Lembaga Pemasyarakatan (Lapas) Kelas IIA Binjai are proactively working to safeguard the health of inmates and staff through a comprehensive mosquito control program. On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, a facility-wide fogging operation was conducted in inmate housing and other areas prone to mosquito breeding, a measure taken to prevent the spread of dengue fever.
The initiative was led by Lapas Kelas IIA Binjai Warden, Wawan Irawan, alongside Head of Security, Rudi Icuana Sembiring and a team of correctional officers. The coordinated effort ensured all housing areas were thoroughly treated.
This preventative measure is particularly important in densely populated environments like correctional facilities, where the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses can be elevated. Beyond fogging, staff are also monitoring for standing water and damp areas that could serve as breeding grounds, as part of an integrated pest management strategy.
“This is a concrete step we are taking to provide maximum protection to inmates and staff, and to ensure the prison environment remains clean, healthy, and habitable,” stated Wawan Irawan. Maintaining a healthy environment within correctional facilities is crucial for both public health and the well-being of those incarcerated.
Rudi Icuana Sembiring added that the fogging will be carried out regularly and consistently, alongside ongoing efforts to improve cleanliness within the housing units. Inmates are receiving education on practicing healthy habits to prevent the spread of disease and contribute to a more humane, professional, and ethical correctional system.
