Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, is partnering with NASA on a new initiative to safeguard Earth from potential asteroid impacts.
The program, known as NEO Hunter, will leverage Blue Origin’s Blue Ring platform – a versatile space station capable of supporting multiple payloads and operating across vast distances, including to cislunar space and even Mars. This collaboration underscores the growing interest in proactive planetary defense strategies within the space industry.
The project aims to detect, analyze, and potentially deflect the trajectory of near-Earth objects that could pose a threat to the planet. The initial phase will involve deploying cubesats to approach and study the physical characteristics of targeted asteroids, including their mass and composition. These details are crucial for determining the most effective intervention strategy.
One proposed solution involves utilizing an ion beam to apply continuous thrust to an asteroid, gradually altering its course. This technology builds upon existing ion propulsion systems already employed in various space missions.
Should this method prove insufficient, a more forceful approach is planned: kinetic impact. In this scenario, a spacecraft would be directed at high speed toward the asteroid to change its orbit, a technique successfully demonstrated by NASA’s DART mission in 2022.
Prior to any impact, a mini-satellite called “Slamcam” would record the event to analyze the results in real-time.
Through this project, Blue Origin intends to demonstrate the potential of commercial space infrastructure to play a significant role in large-scale scientific and security missions, although also reducing costs. The company stated that this initiative highlights the growing role of the private sector in space exploration and planetary protection.
