Jeff Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, is collaborating with NASA and the California Institute of Technology to develop technology aimed at protecting Earth from potentially hazardous asteroids. This initiative, known as the Near Earth Objects (NEO) Hunter mission, seeks to identify and deflect asteroids that could pose a threat to our planet.

The project leverages Blue Origin’s Blue Ring platform, a versatile modular satellite capable of carrying up to 4,000 kilograms of payload. Designed for operation in a variety of orbits – from low Earth orbit to cislunar space and even as far as Mars – Blue Ring offers flexibility for both planetary defense and broader space exploration efforts. This adaptability is crucial for responding to threats from different locations in space.

How NEO Hunter Will Identify and Redirect Asteroids

The NEO Hunter mission will unfold in two phases. The first phase involves deploying a series of cubesats to approach and characterize potentially dangerous space objects. Analyzing an asteroid’s composition, mass, and density will inform the selection of the most effective deflection technique. Understanding these characteristics is key to successfully altering an asteroid’s trajectory.

One proposed method utilizes an ion beam emitter, a technology that directs a stream of charged particles at the asteroid’s surface to subtly alter its orbit. This approach is similar to the ion drive systems used in previous NASA missions, such as the DART mission. The emitted particles provide a precise force to redirect asteroids without causing fragmentation.

Kinetic Impact as a Secondary Defense Strategy

If an asteroid proves too large or moves too quickly for ion beam deflection, NEO Hunter will transition to a second phase called “Robust Kinetic Disruption.” This strategy mirrors the success of NASA’s DART mission, which physically impacted the asteroid Dimorphos, successfully changing its orbit.

Blue Origin plans for NEO Hunter to impact asteroids at speeds reaching 36,370 kilometers per hour. Prior to impact, a little satellite called “Slamcam” will be released to record the collision, assessing the effectiveness of the deflection and gathering crucial data for mission evaluation.

Blue Ring’s Advantages for Planetary Defense

According to a Blue Origin post on X, the Blue Ring platform represents an innovative and cost-effective approach to both scientific missions and planetary defense. Its modular design, featuring up to 13 connection ports, allows for the integration of various payloads without the need for building entirely new satellites. This streamlined approach can significantly reduce costs and development time.

Beyond NEO Hunter, Blue Ring is too being developed for applications such as telecommunications orbiters on Mars and advanced orbital awareness sensors. Earlier this year, the company successfully launched its first orbital awareness sensor developed in partnership with Scout Space, demonstrating the platform’s expanding capabilities.

The Growing Importance of Near-Earth Object Defense

Awareness of potential impacts from near-Earth objects is increasing. Recent events, such as a meteor entering a home in Germany and an asteroid passing close to Earth, have highlighted the need for proactive planetary defense measures. Astronomers have long maintained catalogs of large asteroids that could potentially impact Earth, though currently no significant threats are imminent.

Technologies like NEO Hunter are vital for establishing early warning systems and asteroid deflection capabilities. The collaboration between commercial entities like Blue Origin and space agencies like NASA is essential for safeguarding the planet from potentially catastrophic cosmic threats. These advancements are crucial for ensuring the long-term safety of Earth and its inhabitants.

The planned use of both ion beam technology and kinetic impact offers flexible solutions tailored to the characteristics and size of each target asteroid.
