Bluepoint Games Shut Down: Sony Closes Remake Studio

Sony has confirmed the closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio renowned for its critically acclaimed remakes of titles like “Shadow of the Colossus” and “Demon’s Souls.”

The decision to shutter the studio comes just five years after Sony acquired Bluepoint in 2021, and notably, no new games have been released since the acquisition. The news was initially reported by Bloomberg and subsequently confirmed by Sony in a statement.

Based in Texas, Bluepoint Games will officially cease operations in March, impacting approximately 70 employees. The move underscores the increasing volatility within the gaming industry, as companies reassess their portfolios and development strategies.

“As a result of a recent business review, the decision was made to close Bluepoint Games in March,” Sony stated, adding thanks to the team for their “passion, creativity and craftsmanship.”

Bluepoint Games had established a reputation for expertly revitalizing classic games, leading many fans to anticipate a remake of “Bloodborne” as the studio’s next major project. Yet, the studio was later assigned to develop a “live service” game based on “God of War” after contributing to the development of “God of War Ragnarök.”

That project was canceled in early 2025, leaving the studio in an uncertain position. PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst explained the closure in an internal note, citing a “steadily more challenging industry environment” and increased development costs alongside shifting player behavior.

“While I know this is difficult news to hear, I am confident in the direction we have chosen. Creativity, innovation and creating unforgettable experiences for players remain at the heart of PlayStation Studios,” Hulst said.

The closure of Bluepoint Games highlights the challenges even highly respected studios face in navigating the evolving landscape of the video game industry, where shifting market demands and economic pressures can lead to difficult decisions.
