BMW is set to launch a new all-electric 3 Series this fall, marking the second model in the automaker’s new “Neue Klasse” generation – following the iX3, which was recently tested.
The new model will be named the BMW i3, but it’s a distinct vehicle from the radically different, smaller i3 first introduced in 2013 as BMW’s initial foray into electric vehicles.

Long Range and All-Wheel Drive
BMW revealed the first images of the new i3 on Wednesday, and simultaneously announced that the vehicle will offer similar specifications to the iX3 – but with an extended range thanks to its lower and more aerodynamic design. This focus on efficiency is a key trend in the current EV market.
The i3 is expected to achieve a WLTP range of up to 900 kilometers (approximately 559 miles), positioning it as one of the longest-range electric vehicles available – surpassed only by the Lucid Air Grand Touring (960 km), which is in a significantly higher price bracket.

The i3 will feature a 108 kilowatt-hour battery pack, and the launch version, the i3 50 xDrive, will approach equipped with all-wheel drive and the same 469 horsepower found in the iX3. Of those, 326 horsepower will power the rear motor and 143 horsepower will drive the front.
An 800-volt architecture enables charging at up to 400 kilowatts, which is expected to deliver the same charging times as the iX3 – 21 minutes from 10 to 80 percent – a figure confirmed during testing.
