BMW is considering an all-electric version of its Z4 roadster, potentially phasing out the internal combustion engine for the model, according to BMW product director Berns Kerbers. The company has not yet provided a detailed timeline or firm commitment for the future of the Z4.
Kerbers indicated there could be market demand for such a vehicle, but clarified that an electric Z4 is not currently a top priority for BMW. The automaker has a number of new and updated models planned for the next few years. BMW is also exploring the possibility of offering electric sports cars, the director noted.
The current generation Z4 is the result of a collaboration between BMW and Toyota, sharing a platform with the Toyota Supra sports car. Both automakers have leveraged components and technology from each other in the development of these vehicles.
Production of the current Z4 generation is nearing its end, with a “Final Edition” model planned. This will represent the last opportunity to purchase a new Z4, as neither BMW nor Toyota have announced a direct successor. However, both companies have left the door open to the possibility of a future iteration of the model.
