Tejano music superstar Bobby Pulido has won the Democratic primary in Texas and will face off against Monica de la Cruz in November’s midterm elections for the U.S. House seat representing Texas’ 15th Congressional District (the Rio Grande Valley).

Pulido’s entry into the political arena marks a significant crossover moment for the beloved Tejano artist, who has spent decades captivating audiences with hits like “Desvelado” and “Se Murió de Amor.” He is a five-time Latin Grammy nominee and eight-time Tejano Music Award winner.

“You sit in living rooms and kitchens and hear what’s really happening to our communities,” Pulido said to supporters at his watch party in Pharr on Tuesday night, according to reports.

The 15th District has turn into a key battleground in Texas politics. It was redrawn in 2025 following a mid-decade redistricting effort that critics allege was designed to favor Republicans, spurred by former President Donald Trump. De La Cruz, currently holding the seat, is running unopposed within her party. The district previously flipped to Republican control in 2022, and De La Cruz increased her margin of victory last year despite Democratic investment in challenger Michelle Vallejo.

Pulido’s campaign will now focus on unseating De La Cruz in what is expected to be a closely watched race. Recent polling from House Majority PAC shows Pulido within striking distance of the incumbent, with 38% of constituents saying they would vote for him compared to 41% for De La Cruz, and 21% undecided. HMP polling too suggests Pulido outperforms the generic Democrat in the district, which has a Trump +16 margin.

Prior to launching his congressional bid, Pulido announced his retirement from music in November 2024, signaling his intention to dedicate himself to public service. He formally announced his campaign in September 2025. The Texas Tribune reported at the time that his candidacy gives Democrats their best opportunity to flip a Republican-held seat in 2026.

Pulido first defeated Ada Cuellar, an emergency physician, in the Democratic primary. The Associated Press called the race for Pulido just before 9:30 p.m. On Tuesday, March 4, 2026, with Pulido earning 26,511 votes to Cuellar’s 12,276 with 70% of precincts reporting.
