Grammy-winning singer Bobby Pulido has won the Democratic primary in Texas and will challenge incumbent Republican Monica de la Cruz for the state’s 15th Congressional District seat in November. The race is expected to be closely watched, given the district’s Republican lean.
Pulido secured 67.5% of the vote, defeating Ada Cuéllar, who received 32.5%. The win marks a significant turn for the Tejano superstar, who has been a fixture in South Texas communities for decades.
Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), hailed Pulido as a “cultural icon” and “champion for families” in the district. “Voters know and trust Bobby as he’s been present in this community for decades,” DelBene said. “The same can’t be said for Monica De La Cruz, who has spent years lying to them. Bobby Pulido is the clear choice for South Texas voters who want to send someone to Congress who will truly be a voice for their values.”
Beyond his music career, the 54-year-old Pulido studied political science in San Antonio before launching his three-decade-long musical journey. He is as well a small business owner, and his experiences navigating the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the Rio Grande Valley motivated his run for Congress. De la Cruz won the seat in 2024 with 57.1% of the vote, against Michelle Vallejo’s 42.9%.
Born and raised in Edinburg, Texas, where he still resides with his wife, Pulido is the father of four children. Campaign materials highlight his upbringing rooted in the values of hard work, humility, family, and faith, shaped by his father’s journey from agricultural worker to musician.
