The Bristol rugby community is mourning the sudden loss of former captain Matt Salter, who has died at the age of 49.

Salter, a standout leader for the club, captained Bristol for four seasons, consistently leading by example on the pitch. Rugby historian Mark Hoskins recalled Salter’s unwavering commitment to the team, saying, “An outstanding leader for Bristol, he captained the club for four seasons and he led from the front, without any question at all.”

Hoskins shared a vivid memory of a particularly tough match against Gloucester, where Bristol hadn’t secured a win in twelve years. “I have one memory of a game in Gloucester, where Bristol hadn’t won for about 12 years, where quite near the end he had to leave the field because his face was covered in blood.” Despite the injury, Salter’s dedication was immediately apparent.

“But a few minutes later he was back on because another player was injured, he was that sort of player, he gave absolutely 100% for his team and a great, great leader,” Hoskins added. This exemplifies the relentless spirit Salter brought to every game.

“Matt will be greatly missed across the Clifton and wider Bristol rugby community,” those who knew him said. The loss is felt deeply within the club and the broader rugby world, as Salter’s impact extended far beyond his playing days.
