The highly anticipated return of K-pop sensation BTS after all members completed their mandatory military service took place last night (March 21) with a large-scale performance in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square. The event drew global attention from the ARMY (fanbase) and was seen as a key indicator for revitalizing Korean culture and the economy. However, actual attendance numbers appeared to fall short of initial predictions of 260,000.

According to Korean media reports, the 36 businesses in the Gwanghwamun and Jongno areas saw average sales increase by approximately 1.4 times compared to the previous week, with stores in the core performance area experiencing increases of up to four times, reaching a recent high. Battery sales for light sticks were particularly strong, increasing fivefold. Sales of wet wipes rose by 3.6% in response to the high temperatures and large crowds.

However, some businesses, anticipating a crowd of 260,000, significantly increased their inventory—even by more than fifty times their usual stock—only to find that the actual turnout didn’t meet expectations. Large-scale traffic control and road closures on the day of the event also led to crowds dispersing to other areas, resulting in insufficient customer traffic for some businesses. Social media users shared that a significant amount of sandwiches and rice balls prepared by some stores remained unsold after the event and ultimately had to be discarded.
