Budapest Braces for Massive 'System-Breaking' Protest Concert at Heroes' Square

Organized by Róbert Puzsér, the “Rendszerbontó Nagykoncert” (System-Breaking Great Concert) is designed as a protest against the Orbán administration and the Fidesz party. According to Puzsér, the primary goal of the event is to increase voter turnout. The concert is scheduled to run from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM on April 10, featuring 50 different performers, each tasked with singing a single “system-critical” song.

Despite the scale of the event, some high-profile artists have declined to participate. Puzsér revealed that Majka turned down an invitation after requesting three days to consider the offer. Puzsér noted that he would have set aside his own critical views of the artist, believing that Majka’s song “Csurran-cseppen” would have been a fitting addition to the program. The group Bëlga refused to perform, stating that they do not wish to be involved in politics.

The scale of the gathering has forced the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) to implement closures around Heroes’ Square starting as early as Thursday evening. Beginning April 9 at 8:00 PM, lanes on Dózsa György road heading toward Váci út—specifically the section between Andrássy út and the Műcsarnok—are closed to traffic.

Further temporary traffic restrictions will take effect on Friday, April 10. Starting at 8:00 AM, the side of Dózsa György road leading toward Thököly út will be closed between Andrássy út and the Műcsarnok. During this time, motorists will be unable to turn left from Andrássy út onto Dózsa György road at Heroes’ Square and lane closures will be in place in front of the Museum of Fine Arts.

As the event begins, restrictions will intensify. Around 2:30 PM on April 10, authorities will close the Kós Károly promenade in both directions, as well as the Olof Palme promenade between Verona Angyalai street and Heroes’ Square. restrictions on Andrássy út will span the area between Heroes’ Square and Bajza street. Dózsa György road will similarly be closed in both directions between Városligeti fasor and Podmaniczky street.

Public transportation is also affected; the 20E bus will bypass the Heroes’ Square stop when traveling toward Keleti station from 8:00 AM on April 10 until 6:00 AM on Saturday, April 11. Due to the necessary dismantling perform following the concert, all traffic limitations are expected to remain in place until 6:00 AM on Saturday, April 11.

The decision to hold such a massive event in one of the city’s most prominent landmarks underscores the organizers’ intent to create a high-visibility protest. These ongoing closures in the city highlight the logistical challenges of balancing large-scale political expression with urban mobility.
