Fans hoping for a revival of the cult classic “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” will be disappointed to learn the project is no longer moving forward.
The news was shared by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred as Buffy Summers in the original series, via an Instagram post on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” Gellar said in a video posted to her account.
“Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy’,” she revealed.
Gellar, 48, earned a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Buffy, a high school student unexpectedly tasked with battling vampires and other forces of darkness. The original series ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, according to Deadline.
The planned reboot, titled “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” was first announced in February 2025 and would have seen Gellar reprise her role alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the next Slayer. The project was being directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao.
While Hulu has decided not to proceed with this particular iteration, the studio is reportedly still interested in exploring future possibilities for the “Buffy” franchise, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter and Gizmodo.
Gellar concluded her Instagram post with a lighthearted message, stating, “This doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.” The cancellation comes amid a wave of revivals and reboots for beloved television series.
