Burjassot, Spain, will mark International Women’s Day on March 8 with a series of free theatrical performances designed to highlight issues of gender equality, and empowerment. The events, organized by the Burjassot City Council’s Department of Equality and Feminism, aim to use the arts as a platform for raising awareness and celebrating women’s achievements.

The day’s events initiate at 11:00 a.m. In Plaza Emilio Castelar with Niñas Rebeldes (Rebel Girls), a family-friendly show by Rebombori Cultural. The performance blends storytelling, music, and puppetry to explore the lives of extraordinary women – including Ada Lovelace, Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, Hatshepsut, and Simone Biles – who have made significant contributions to science, art, sports, and beyond.

Following a reading of the International Women’s Day Manifesto at noon, the same plaza will host Dominare, a contemporary dance piece by Cia. Maduixa. The performance uses physical expression to examine power dynamics and the historical limitations placed on women. Organizers say Dominare addresses often-overlooked or normalized instances of abuse, prompting audiences to consider their own roles as both potential victims and active participants in these dynamics.

City officials say the selection of theatrical performances underscores Burjassot’s commitment to using culture as a vehicle for promoting equality and visibility for women’s issues. The events are free and open to the public.
