Bus crashes into bakery in Münchwilen TG – 80-ton crane used for recovery

A bus crashed into the backyard of a bakery in Münchwilen, Switzerland, on Saturday, narrowly missing two patrons. The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. Local time, prompted a large emergency response and briefly disrupted train service in the area.

Close Call for Bakery Customers

According to an eyewitness account from a 20 Minuten Newsscout, a father and daughter were nearly struck by the bus as it veered off the road and into the outdoor seating area of the “Feinbeck” bakery. “They were sitting there drinking coffee,” the witness said. Tables and chairs were overturned, and dishes were broken in the chaos.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. Other patrons were also present on the bakery’s patio, according to the eyewitness. Despite the damage, the bakery was able to remain open following the crash, and police confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Collision with Trailer Led to Crash

Authorities determined the crash occurred after the bus collided with a car trailer on Wilerstrasse in Münchwilen. The impact caused the bus to break through a guardrail and enter the bakery’s property. This incident underscores the potential dangers of roadway collisions, even in seemingly pedestrian areas.

Approximately ten members of the Hinterthurgau security association responded to the scene. During the recovery operation, which involved the use of the heavy-duty crane, the power line had to be grounded, causing a temporary interruption of train service in the area. The extent of the damage to the bus and the bakery property is significant but has not yet been fully assessed. The road was cleared and reopened to traffic around 5:30 p.m. Local time.
