Bus-Sized Asteroid to Pass Earth Tonight, Days After Discovery

A space rock approximately 40 feet in diameter, designated “2026 EG1,” is expected to make its closest approach to Earth tonight, coming within 198,000 miles of the planet. This close encounter occurs just days after the asteroid was initially detected, according to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

The asteroid is traveling at a speed exceeding 21,500 miles per hour. For context, the average distance between Earth and the Moon is about 239,000 miles, as noted by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This makes the asteroid’s approach relatively close in astronomical terms.

Asteroids are remnants from the formation of the solar system, dating back approximately 4.6 billion years. These rocky masses are largely concentrated in the main asteroid belt, located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. However, some asteroids, categorized as Near-Earth Objects, follow paths that bring them closer to our planet. NASA’s Eyes on Asteroids provides a real-time visualization of these objects.

Near-Earth objects are defined as those with orbits bringing them within 120 million miles of the Sun, and therefore into Earth’s orbital neighborhood. The tracking of these objects is a key component of planetary defense efforts, as understanding their trajectories helps assess potential risks.

Recent discoveries highlight ongoing efforts to monitor and characterize asteroids. Earlier this year, scientists identified the fastest-spinning asteroid, “2025 MN45,” which rotates once every two minutes. In February of last year, NASA likewise assessed the impact probability of asteroid “2024 YR4” in 2032, initially estimating it at 3.1 percent – the highest probability ever recorded for an object of that size. Further observations later determined that the asteroid posed no significant impact risk. According to Wikipedia, asteroids are classified into types such as C-type, M-type, or S-type based on their composition.

The continuous monitoring of near-Earth asteroids is crucial, as it allows for better prediction and potential mitigation of any future impact hazards. This ongoing research contributes to a deeper understanding of the solar system and the potential threats it poses.
