Jakarta – Owners of the increasingly popular BYD Atto 1 electric vehicle in Indonesia will benefit from significantly reduced annual tax obligations, a key factor in the growing adoption of EVs nationwide. Recent regulations stipulate a yearly tax of just 143,000 Rupiah for the Atto 1, largely due to government incentives aimed at promoting electric vehicle use. This article details the specifics of these tax benefits and provides a comprehensive overview of ownership costs for the Atto 1 and its recently released sibling model, the Atto 2.

Affordability and low taxes are key selling points for the BYD Atto 1 electric vehicle. Here’s a breakdown of the annual tax obligations for owners of this increasingly popular model.

The BYD Atto 1 has quickly gained traction as one of the more accessible electric vehicle options on the market, with a price point currently below 200 million Indonesian Rupiah. The BYD Atto 2 is also available, priced between 199 million and 235 million Rupiah.

BYD Atto 1 Tax Costs

Like most electric vehicles, the BYD Atto 1 benefits from significantly reduced tax rates. Owners can expect to pay just 143,000 Rupiah annually in taxes – a cost that is notably lower than that of comparable gasoline-powered vehicles. This tax advantage is a key factor driving the adoption of electric vehicles in the region.

The favorable tax treatment for electric vehicles is a deliberate policy aimed at encouraging their wider adoption. Regardless of the model or price, electric vehicles qualify for these reduced rates.

Specifically, the Motor Vehicle Tax (PKB) for electric vehicles is set at 0 percent of the taxable base (DP PKB), as outlined in Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 8 of 2024, Article 10, concerning the basis for assessing Motor Vehicle Tax, Motor Vehicle Name Transfer Fee, and Heavy Equipment Tax for 2024.

“The imposition of PKB (Motor Vehicle Tax) for Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicles (KBL) for people, goods, public passenger transport, and public goods transport is set at 0 percent of the taxable base and BBNKB,” the regulation states.

The regulation does not specify an end date for this tax incentive, suggesting that the reduced rates for electric vehicles, including the BYD Atto 1, will remain in effect indefinitely. As a result, owners are only required to pay the mandatory contribution for Road Traffic Accident Funds (SWDKLLJ), which amounts to 143,000 Rupiah per year.

Beyond annual taxes, the BYD Atto 1 offers a competitive driving range. Equipped with a 30.08 kWh battery, the vehicle can travel up to 300 km on a single charge – sufficient for a round trip between Jakarta and Bandung. A Premium variant, featuring a larger 38.88 kWh battery, extends the range to 380 km. Both variants deliver the same maximum power, torque, and acceleration.

The BYD Atto 1’s electric motor produces 75 kW of power and 135 Nm of torque, enabling a top speed of 120 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 50 km/h takes just 4.9 seconds.
