Surprise Discovery Inside BYD Electric Motor

A detailed analysis of a modern BYD IDM-210 electric motor, boasting a power output of 183 kW (approximately 249 horsepower), has revealed an unexpected component source. According to reports, engineers at Munro, a U.S.-based engineering firm, disassembled the motor to study its design and manufacturing origins.

The motor, integrated with its inverter into a single, compact unit, weighs just 84 kilograms. This lightweight and compact design facilitates straightforward installation across a range of electric vehicle models, from smaller cars to larger SUVs like the BYD Han and BYD Tang.

During the disassembly process, engineers discovered the logo of BorgWarner, a significant American supplier of automotive technologies, imprinted on the motor’s casing. This finding suggests a deeper connection between the Chinese automaker and established Western automotive suppliers than previously understood.

BYD Motor Design Rooted in Western Engineering

BorgWarner has expanded its capabilities in recent years through acquisitions of several engineering firms in Europe and North America, including Remy International and TorqTransfer. The presence of the BorgWarner logo indicates that elements of BYD’s motor technology are based on Western designs and expertise.

Engineers involved in the analysis noted the high quality of the motor’s construction, highlighting a strong understanding of electric propulsion system development. The motor incorporates several innovative technical solutions, including an integrated cooling system within the aluminum housing and sophisticated control of temperatures and electrical currents. It operates at high speeds, reaching up to 18,000 revolutions per minute, with a transmission ratio exceeding 12:1.

How BYD Achieves Efficient Electric Vehicle Production

The analysis suggests BYD’s design prioritizes cost reduction without compromising performance. The rotor utilizes permanent magnets with a high concentration of rare earth materials, enhancing resistance to high temperatures and reducing the require for more expensive cooling solutions.

the design incorporates standard, lower-cost bearings in place of ceramic alternatives in certain components. The BYD unit is viewed as a prime example of intelligent engineering, optimizing production costs while maintaining robust performance. This approach is likely contributing to BYD’s competitive pricing in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.

BYD surpassed Tesla in 2025 to become the world’s largest automaker, driven by strong global sales of electric vehicles. The company’s rapid growth and introduction of numerous new models have established it as a major force in the automotive industry. As of April, BYD Romania is planning to establish a network of 20 dealerships and offer 7 electric and plug-in hybrid models for sale.
