SC Cambuur’s push for promotion to the Eredivisie hit a snag Saturday, falling 3-4 at home to Jong AZ in a match marred by late drama and controversy. The result leaves their promotion fate hanging in the balance as the season enters its critical final stages.
Cambuur appeared to be on course for victory for much of the match, but a chaotic finish – including a penalty and a stoppage in play – saw them concede a lead and ultimately suffer defeat. The loss has amplified the uncertainty surrounding their chances of reaching the top tier of Dutch football.
Following the match, Cambuur manager Henk de Jong voiced his strong disapproval of the officiating, specifically targeting referee Wouter Wiersma. De Jong stated, “He should not be allowed to referee here,” adding that Wiersma is “not capable” of handling a match at the Kooi Stadion. He also criticized the KNVB for appointing a referee from the nearby town of Surhuisterveen (approximately 30 minutes away), arguing that the proximity created an unfair situation.
De Jong didn’t limit his criticism to the referee’s location, also questioning several calls made during the game, including a missed foul on Mark Diemers that he felt warranted a yellow card. Despite the frustration with the officiating, De Jong acknowledged his team’s own shortcomings, noting they missed numerous opportunities and conceded four goals.
The defeat complicates Cambuur’s path to promotion. ADO Den Haag can secure the unofficial league title with a win against De Graafschap on Sunday. Cambuur will then have a chance to officially clinch promotion with a positive result in their away match against FC Emmen two days later.
