Health officials in Pernambuco, Brazil, are offering free sexual health services throughout Carnaval, the country’s annual festival. The initiative aims to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and provide access to HIV prevention tools.

A mobile health unit, dubbed “Prevention for All,” is stationed at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas in Recife, offering services without requiring prior appointments. This strategic location allows easy access for festival attendees.

Services include the prescription and distribution of PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) for HIV, as well as the availability of self-tests for HIV. Free condoms, lubricant, and informational materials are also being provided. These preventative measures are crucial for protecting public health during large gatherings where STI transmission risk can be elevated.

“Innovating this Carnaval 2026, SES-PE is providing PrEP and PEP services at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas from 4 PM to midnight, offering these prophylaxis strategies, HIV self-tests, and health guidance through informational materials. At the location, attendees can also collect the new condoms and lubricant from the Ministry of Health (MS),” explains Grazielle Vasconcelos, Manager of STI and AIDS Surveillance at SES-PE.

The health initiative extends beyond Recife to Bezerros, a municipality in the state’s Agreste region, where a mobile trailer is offering STI testing and health guidance to those participating in the traditional Papangus celebrations. Condoms and lubricant are also available at this location.

Individuals needing PEP for HIV exposure are directed to seek care at a local Urgent Care Unit (UPA). PEP must be initiated within 72 hours of potential exposure and continued for 28 days to be effective.

Understanding PrEP and PEP

Both PrEP and PEP are prophylactic treatments designed to prevent HIV infection. PrEP involves the daily use of medication by individuals who are HIV-negative but at higher risk of infection, reducing the likelihood of contracting the virus.

PEP, is an emergency measure for situations involving potential HIV exposure, such as unprotected sex or accidental contact with biological materials.

Both options are considered safe and effective components of a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy. However, officials emphasize that condoms remain the primary method of protection against a wider range of STIs.
