Casio Launches Limited-Edition Luxury Calculator Priced at $624
Casio has unveiled a limited-edition calculator, the S100X-JC1-U “The Special One,” boasting a hand-applied traditional Japanese lacquer finish. The calculator is priced at approximately $624 and limited to just 650 units worldwide.
The unique calculator features an aluminum housing finished with urushi lacquer applied by master artisan Ryuji Umeda of Yamakyu Shitsuki, transforming a standard office tool into a collectible item, according to Hiconsumption. This move highlights a growing trend of manufacturers elevating everyday technology into luxury goods.
Each key and the front of the S100X are framed with a red accent, while the buttons are labeled in gold. The display utilizes an FSTN LCD designed for high contrast and reduced glare, featuring navy blue digits on an almost white background. Casio states the display offers improved visibility compared to most pocket calculators due to a double coating.
The calculator incorporates a scissor mechanism in its keys, similar to those found in many laptop keyboards, providing a defined pressure point and consistent feel. It also features three-key rollover, designed to handle rapid inputs without errors.
Weighing 275 grams, the S100X is powered by a CR2025 battery, which Casio estimates will last for seven years with one hour of daily use. A 12-pack of CR2025 batteries is available on Amazon for $2.99.
Currently available in Japan for 99,000 yen (around $630), the calculator can also be imported through platforms like Zenmarket. Casio describes the S100X as the result of its pursuit to combine luxurious aesthetics with computation. Notebookcheck reports the calculator’s body is made of shaved aluminum alloy with a diamond-cut border.
