Caterpillar Launches Branded Car – With a Catch

Caterpillar Inc. Has unveiled its first branded pickup truck, though the launch reveals a strategic partnership rather than a completely new vehicle development, HVG reports.

The much-anticipated vehicle, initially expected to feature a proprietary Caterpillar diesel engine, is based on the Ford Super Duty platform. The truck displays Caterpillar branding extensively, from the grille to the steering wheel, but fundamentally relies on Ford’s underlying engineering.

Rather than focusing on mechanical innovation, Caterpillar is emphasizing the integration of technology into the “workplace truck.” The model includes a drone launch station and an onboard artificial intelligence assistant, designed to aid in construction site oversight through the VisionLink system. This effectively transforms the vehicle into a mobile command center for construction managers.

Previous reports from internal sources had suggested the possibility of V6 and V8 engines developed in-house by Caterpillar, along with a substantial price tag. Still, these expectations have not materialized with this initial release. The current pickup appears to function more as a technological testbed than a fully production-ready Caterpillar truck.

The launch underscores Caterpillar’s increasing focus on integrating digital solutions into its traditional heavy machinery business, a move that could appeal to investors interested in the company’s diversification efforts. Hirnavigator also covered the announcement.

While Caterpillar initially signaled potential for a fully independent pickup truck project, Totalcar reported in September 2024 that development was still under consideration, with options including engine supply agreements.
