ChatGPT Boycott: Users Flock to Claude After OpenAI’s Pentagon Deal

OpenAI’s recent agreement with the Pentagon to utilize its artificial intelligence (AI) technology for military purposes appears to be backfiring, rather than providing a benefit to the company. Users of “ChatGPT” are demonstrating their disapproval of the move by boycotting the product and opting for alternative AI chatbots, such as “Anthropic Claude.”

In response to the OpenAI and Pentagon agreement, a significant surge in uninstalls of the “ChatGPT” mobile app was observed in the U.S. On February 28, increasing by 295% compared to the previous day. This figure contrasts sharply with a typical daily rate of around 9%. Users are rapidly shifting to competitor products, with “Claude” emerging as the preferred choice. Data from “Sensor Tower” indicates that U.S. Downloads of the “Claude” mobile app rose by 37% on February 27. Following Anthropic’s announcement that it would not cooperate with the Pentagon, downloads increased further by 51% on February 28, making “Claude” the most downloaded free app on the App Store.

Data from “Appfigures” clearly shows that “Claude’s” total daily downloads in the U.S. Surpassed those of “ChatGPT” for the first time on February 28.

The data indicates not only a rise in “ChatGPT” uninstalls, but as well a decline in app downloads. U.S. Downloads decreased by 13% on February 28, and this trend has continued into the current week. Adding to the challenges, “ChatGPT’s” app store rating is also slipping. One-star ratings increased by 775% on February 28, and by a further 100% on March 1 compared to the previous day.
