Chelsea has taken decisive disciplinary action against midfielder Enzo Fernandez, dropping the 24-year-old from the squad for the club’s next two fixtures after the player publicly hinted at a potential move to Real Madrid.

The Argentina international will miss Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale on April 4, 2026, as well as next weekend’s high-stakes Premier League encounter with Manchester City. The move comes amid months of speculation linking Fernandez with a switch to the Bernabeu, despite being under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031.

The breaking point arrived during the recent international break. Following a heavy Champions League last-16 exit to PSG in March, Fernandez told ESPN Argentina that he was unsure if he would still be with Chelsea next season, stating, “My focus is here now. Then the World Cup coming up, so we’ll observe after that.”

The situation escalated further during the Argentina camp when Fernandez told media personality Marcos Giles that he “really likes Madrid,” noting the city’s similarity to Buenos Aires and confirming that he could see himself living there.

“I spoke with Enzo an hour ago. We’ve made a decision – he won’t be available for tomorrow’s game and he won’t be available for Manchester City,” Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed during a press conference on Friday, April 3, 2026. “It’s disappointing to speak in that way… A line was crossed in terms of our culture. We had to make a sanction.”

Despite the harsh penalty, Rosenior suggested this is a short-term disciplinary measure rather than a permanent rift, noting that Fernandez remains frustrated given that of his desire to see Chelsea achieve success this year.

Though, the player’s representation has reacted strongly to the decision. Agent Javier Pastore described the punishment as “completely unfair,” arguing that Fernandez only mentioned the city of Madrid and did not express a desire to leave the club or name a specific team.

“Banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team’s most important players,” Pastore told The Athletic. “There’s no real reason or justification for why he has been banned.”

While Pastore noted that Fernandez accepted the decision out of professionalism, he revealed that the player’s camp intends to meet with Chelsea again after the upcoming World Cup to discuss his future. If an agreement cannot be reached, the agent indicated they will explore other options.

The internal turmoil comes at a critical juncture for the Blues as they fight for Champions League qualification and face a grueling schedule against top-tier opposition.
