Director Chen Sicheng is gearing up for a high-energy return to the big screen with his latest project, Being Toward Death (likewise known as 10 Daredevils). The film is officially scheduled for a wide release in mainland China on May 1, 2026, positioning it as a major contender for the upcoming holiday weekend.
Described as a “life comedy,” the movie explores the intersection of despair, and hope. The plot centers on Zhang Xiaobing, a man who attempts suicide following the death of a loved one. In an effort to settle his debts, he takes a job as a caregiver in Cancer Ward 10, where he is tasked with providing “psychological intervention” for terminal patients. The narrative follows the evolving bond between a man who lost his will to live and a group of patients facing their final days, as they support one another to find meaning and rediscover hope.
The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast, led by Jiang Long, Qi Xi, Yang Chaoyue, Wang Zichuan, Zhang Chi, Cao Bingkun, Huang Yi, and Ye Quanxi. Adding further prestige to the production are special appearances by industry veterans Ni Dahong, Cai Ming, Tian Yu, Ding Jiali, and Cheng Taishen. Chen Sicheng served as writer and director, collaborating with co-directors Jiang Long and Hui Zijie, and co-writers Tan Liying and Liu Shou.
Before its general theatrical debut, Being Toward Death has already garnered critical attention. In March 2026, the film entered the main competition for the Tiantan Award at the 16th Beijing International Film Festival, with a screening scheduled for April 17, 2026. Recent promotional materials, including the “Understanding! Empathy! Get!” trailer and the “Set Off Now” poster, highlight the film’s vibrant energy, depicting the residents of Ward 10 racing against time to fulfill their final wishes—from fighting over WeChat group names to attempting to create an Oscar-worthy documentary.
The movie enters a highly competitive May 1st movie window. While some reports suggest 11 films are competing for audiences, other industry data indicates the number of scheduled releases has grown to 15, with some estimates placing the total at 17 films already set for the holiday. Amidst this crowded slate, Jiang Long and Yang Chaoyue are expected to spark holiday joy in what is being marketed as the most “daring” comedy of the season.
