BEIJING – A significant gold discovery in China is drawing attention from scientists and investors alike, with preliminary analysis suggesting the deposit could rank among the world’s largest. While initial estimates indicated around 330 tons of gold, more detailed 3D modeling suggests the reality could be far more substantial.
Geologists have identified more than 40 gold-bearing veins beneath a field in Pingjiang County. New calculations, as reported by Popular Mechanics, estimate the deposit could contain as much as 1,100 tons of the precious metal, extending to a depth of approximately 1.7 miles (2.8 kilometers). The discovery highlights China’s growing role in global resource exploration and production.

Exceptionally High Gold Concentration
Modern technologies have too allowed for an estimation of the potential value of the find. Based on current gold prices, the deposit could be worth tens of billions of euros, though this remains a preliminary figure based on the amount of metal in the ground. Researchers were also struck by the exceptionally high concentration of gold in some samples, averaging 138 grams per ton of ore – significantly exceeding typical levels.

Despite the optimistic figures, some experts caution that definitive conclusions are premature. Labeling the deposit a “super-giant” is considered bold until further testing and analysis are completed. Exploration of the area is ongoing, with state organizations involved in efforts to more accurately determine the extent of the reserves.
Deposit May Be Even Larger
Interestingly, gold has also been discovered on the edges of the explored area, suggesting the deposit may be even larger than current models indicate. As IFLScience reports, the discovery itself does not automatically guarantee effective extraction. Numerous factors – from geology and technology to economic viability – influence mining, and only a fraction of known reserves are ultimately utilized. Although, China possesses extensive experience in mining and advanced technologies, raising the possibility that this discovery could become one of the world’s most significant gold sources in the future.
