As the Chinese New Year travel season enters its peak, railway ticket sales have surpassed 310 million, signaling a significant return to pre-pandemic travel levels. The surge in passengers reflects a broader trend of increased mobility following recent holiday celebrations.
Rail officials anticipate sending 16.8 million passengers on February 21, the fifth day of the Lunar New Year and have scheduled an additional 2,052 trains to accommodate the demand. On February 20, the national railway system safely transported 15.372 million travelers.
As of 8 a.m. On February 21, 铁路12306 (including its website and app) had sold over 310 million train tickets for the spring travel period.
Popular departure cities include Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Shanghai, Xi’an, Zhengzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing. Travelers are primarily heading to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Zhengzhou. Routes between Nanning and Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai, Shenyang and Beijing, Wuhan and Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenzhen, and roundtrip travel between Xi’an and Chengdu, as well as Wuhan to Guangzhou, are experiencing particularly high demand.
Looking at ticket availability, routes from Shanghai to Xuzhou, Hefei, Wenzhou, Zhengzhou, and Changsha, as well as Guangzhou to Nanning and Changsha, and Shenzhen to Changsha and Hangzhou to Fuyang, have ample seating available between February 22 and February 23. Tickets are still available, though limited, on routes from Beijing to Harbin, Zhengzhou, Baotou, and Huhhot, as well as from Fuzhou to Beijing, Shanghai to Fuyang and Bozhou, Guangzhou to Guiyang, Xi’an to Lanzhou, and Shenyang to Harbin.
Between February 24 and March 3, routes between Beijing and Shanghai, Shanghai and Wenzhou or Xuzhou, Changsha and Shenzhen, and Shanghai to Hefei and Wuhan are expected to have available seats. Additional availability exists on routes from Beijing to Taiyuan and Handan, Fuzhou to Beijing, Shanghai to Fuyang and Shenzhen, Kunming to Chengdu, Hangzhou to Hefei, Shenyang to Harbin, Guiyang to Kunming, and Hefei to Wenzhou.

Railway authorities are advising passengers that stations and trains are experiencing high volumes of travelers during the return peak. They urge travelers to monitor travel information and weather updates, allow ample time to reach stations, adhere to baggage regulations, and board trains according to the car number, date, route, and seat indicated on their tickets to ensure a smooth travel experience.
