Guangzhou’s “New Year Spending Spree” Boosted by Government Subsidies

Guangzhou’s consumer market experienced a strong start to the new year, driven by a government subsidy program encouraging consumers to trade in older goods for new ones. The initiative has spurred significant sales across multiple sectors, including home appliances, consumer electronics, and automobiles.

Through February 1, 2025, cumulative sales generated by the trade-in program in Guangzhou exceeded 613 million yuan (approximately $85.4 million USD), with subsidies totaling 96.2593 million yuan (approximately $13.4 million USD), according to data from the Guangzhou City Commerce Bureau. This program underscores the Chinese government’s efforts to stimulate domestic demand and encourage consumption.

The home appliance sector has been a major beneficiary, with trade-ins accounting for over 100 million yuan in sales between December 31, 2024, and February 4, 2025, and 13.97 million yuan in subsidies distributed. JD.com reported a total transaction volume of 6.17 million yuan during the Spring Festival holiday, with 4.54 million yuan attributed to home appliance trade-ins and 640,000 yuan in subsidies redeemed. Guangbai and Guangzhou Friendship Group led sales of digital products eligible for the subsidies, completing over 600 trade-in orders and generating over 2.7 million yuan in sales.

Consumer electronics, particularly mobile phones and 3C products, saw a substantial increase in sales, with trade-in value reaching 300 million yuan. Many citizens are opting to use their Lunar New Year red envelopes to purchase new mobile phones, reflecting a shift towards upgrading personal technology. Sales of high-efficiency appliances accounted for over 90% of the total, and certain tablet models experienced sales growth of over 100%.

One retailer reported its largest single transaction during the period was a customer purchasing over 100,000 yuan worth of high-end appliances, benefiting from approximately 30,000 yuan in combined subsidies. The “national subsidy” combined with discounts offered by retailers like Guangbai and Guangzhou Friendship, which offered discounts of 8.5-9.5% on appliances with additional discounts of 100-300 yuan on purchases over 1,000 yuan, fueled the shopping spree.

The automotive sector also saw increased activity, with 607 car dealerships remaining open throughout the holiday period, attracting customers with combined national subsidies and dealer discounts. The government has allocated 62.5 billion yuan in subsidies to support consumer spending, with vehicle subsidies capped at 20,000 yuan.
