Ketapang, Indonesia

A group of 15 Chinese nationals allegedly attacked Indonesian military personnel and damaged company vehicles at a gold mining operation in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The incident raises concerns about security at foreign-owned businesses operating in the region.

According to reports, five members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) were injured during the altercation, and two vehicles belonging to PT Sultan Rafli Mandiri (PT SRM) sustained damage. The attackers were reportedly armed with sharp weapons and airsoft guns.

Imran Kurniawan, Chief Security for PT SRM, confirmed the incident, stating it occurred in the Pemuatan Batu village, Tumbang Titi sub-district, Ketapang Regency, at approximately 3:40 PM local time.

“During the attack, one company car and a motorcycle were damaged by the Chinese nationals,” Kurniawan told local media Sunday.

The incident began around 3:30 PM when PT SRM’s security personnel noticed drone activity near the mining site. Simultaneously, five TNI members from the 6th Combat Engineer Battalion/Satya Digdaya (Yonzipur 6/SD) stationed nearby began pursuing the drone’s pilot.

“As our security team pursued the drone operator, the five Yonzipur 6/SD soldiers joined the chase, as they were conducting unit basic training at PT SRM. A total of six personnel were involved in pursuing the drone pilot,” Kurniawan explained.

At approximately 3:40 PM, about 300 meters from the PT SRM entrance, the security team encountered four individuals flying the drone.

“As our security personnel and the TNI soldiers approached, eleven additional Chinese nationals suddenly appeared, carrying four bladed weapons, airsoft guns, and stun devices,” Kurniawan said.

Kurniawan stated the Chinese nationals then attacked the six personnel with the bladed weapons. Outnumbered, the pursuing team retreated to the company premises to avoid further confrontation.

“It’s clear this incident occurred after we began pursuing the drone pilot. The motive for flying the drone or the attack remains unknown,” Kurniawan added.

PT SRM sustained significant damage to a company car and motorcycle as a result of the incident.

“Our security team secured one bladed weapon as evidence. We immediately contacted the Tumbang Titi Police. Officers have arrived to investigate the situation,” he said.

Police Chief of Tumbang Titi, Iptu Made Adyana, confirmed the incident. He noted that PT SRM had not yet filed a formal report but that the situation was currently under control.

“A report has not been filed yet. As of tonight, the situation is stable,” Adyana said when contacted Sunday evening.

He added that PT SRM is coordinating with its legal team to determine the next steps regarding a formal report.
