For Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, home truly feels like a vacation. The 42-year-old star of “Thor” and “The Avengers” says leaving Los Angeles and returning to Australia with his family was “the best” decision he ever made, after feeling uncomfortable with the Hollywood lifestyle.
In an interview on the “SmartLess” podcast, Hemsworth explained that the period surrounding the birth of his sons was a turning point. “We’d established ourselves in Los Angeles, but we weren’t loving it. At that time, almost nothing was being filmed there – we were working on projects all around the world. And when you come home and there are paparazzi waiting for you and all the things that come with that life, it makes you think,” the actor said.
Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, who have been together since 2010 and share three children, subsequently moved to Australia, purchasing a large property away from the city. He says life on a farm, with horses, bikes, and proximity to the ocean, gives their children the space and peace that’s hard to find in Los Angeles. “When I come home from work, it feels like I’m on holiday,” he noted.
The actor grew up with his brothers, Liam and Luke Hemsworth, in an area about 20 minutes outside of Melbourne, surrounded by forests and hills. “Our closest neighbors were a couple of kilometers away. It was completely nature – we spent our days outside, making up characters and stories. Probably that’s where my interest in acting began,” he shared.
Before breaking into film, Chris Hemsworth worked for the Australian company Fisher & Paykel, repairing and cleaning breast pumps rented to pharmacies. “That was my first job – fixing the motors and cleaning dried milk with a toothbrush,” he recalled.
His career began with small roles in Australian television productions in the early 2000s, and he gained wider recognition in his home country with the series “Home and Away.” His international breakthrough came with the film “The Cabin in the Woods,” shot in 2009 but released later – after Hemsworth had already become a global star for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His debut as the Norse god in 2011 opened the door to a string of appearances in “The Avengers” and Thor films.
In 2024, the actor received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where he publicly thanked his wife for her support over the years. “None of this would be the same without you by my side,” he said in his speech.
