The Museum of Modern Art in New York City has a new director at the helm: Swiss art curator Christophe Cherix. The appointment, effective March 2025, marks a significant moment for the iconic institution.

Cherix, born in Geneva in 1969, previously served as the Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator at MoMA, according to MoMA’s official website. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having also worked as curator of prints at the Musée d’art et d’histoire de la Ville de Genève before joining the New York museum in 2007.

The selection of Cherix follows an intensive six-month international search, as detailed in a press release from MoMA. He is the seventh director in the museum’s history. The move signals a continuation of insider leadership for the museum, which remains a central force in the global art world.

Cherix received a license ès lettres from the University of Geneva. News of his appointment was first reported on March 30, 2025, by The New York Times, as referenced in his Wikipedia entry.
