Hediye Şanal, an 82-year-old woman from Beyşehir, Turkey, initially sought medical attention for constipation and abdominal pain, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of colon cancer. Following treatment, she has made a full recovery.
Şanal, who received her diagnosis in December, underwent a successful surgery and is now doing well. “I came to the hospital early in the morning. I said, ‘I’m dying, save me,’” she recalled. “I had surgery and haven’t felt any pain since that day. I became like family with my doctor. God bless him. Now I am very well.”
‘TARAMA PROGRAMLARI BÜYÜK ÖNEM TAŞIYOR’
The surgery was performed by General Surgeon Dr. Turan Can Yıldız, who emphasized the importance of early detection. “Our patient presented to our hospital at the complete of December with severe constipation and abdominal pain. After evaluation by the internal medicine department, she was referred to us,” Dr. Yıldız explained.
“During the examination, we detected sensitivity in the lower right abdomen. Subsequent examinations led us to suspect colon cancer. After imaging and colonoscopy procedures performed at our hospital, we diagnosed the patient with colon cancer. After the necessary tests, we determined that the disease was in an early stage and proceeded with surgery.”

The surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged after nine days of monitoring in the hospital. Early diagnosis provides a significant opportunity for a disease-free life. Screening programs are of great importance. Screening guidelines have recently been updated to recommend starting screenings at age 45, rather than 50, based on new research. Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer, chronic constipation, rectal bleeding, or anemia should also be screened.
“I came to the hospital early in the morning. ‘I’m dying, save me,’ I said. I had surgery and haven’t felt any pain since that day. I became like family with my doctor. God bless him. Now I am very well,” Şanal said. The case highlights the critical role of prompt medical attention for gastrointestinal symptoms and the potential for successful treatment with early intervention.
Dr. Yıldız added, “Our patient presented to our hospital at the end of December with severe constipation and abdominal pain. After evaluation by the internal medicine department, she was referred to us.”
