A fresh theatrical production in Geneva, Switzerland, is offering a critical glance at consumer culture and the routines of modern shopping. Coloscopie d’un supermarché, created by the collective Cœur, is currently running at the Théâtre Saint-Gervais and continues through Sunday, March 22, 2026.
The performance reconstructs the experience of a supermarket, aiming to expose how these spaces influence appetites and shape thought. The creators, Marie van Berchem and Vanessa Ferreira Vicente, utilize a visually striking set design, featuring palettes arranged like a giant board game and illuminated by a bluish light. A symphonic score accompanies the scene, with towering stacks of toilet paper adding to the surreal atmosphere.
The play introduces audiences to Mélissa, a shopper at a chain called “Super,” as she navigates the constructed environment. The production, although inventive and emotionally resonant, reportedly loses some momentum due to a lack of fully developed scripting.
Despite this, the show is being described as a compelling exaggeration of the impulses driving shoppers. The artists, also known for their work in plastic arts, effectively draw viewers into the experience. The production serves as a mirror reflecting consumer habits and the underlying motivations behind them.
