Toledo Community Radio Station WAKT 106.1 FM Faces Potential Closure

A beloved Toledo community radio station, WAKT 106.1 FM, is at risk of going off the air by the end of the year due to insufficient funding.

WAKT operates as a low-power, nonprofit station, relying on private donations and grants to broadcast a diverse range of locally-focused programming. The station provides a platform for community members to share music, ideas, and expertise not typically found on commercial radio. Its unique programming model fills a vital niche in the local media landscape, offering a voice to underrepresented groups and perspectives.

“Our goal is to amplify local, diverse voices that you won’t hear anywhere else on radio,” said Nathan Staples, the station’s director of development. Staples, who has been with WAKT for the past year, highlighted the variety of shows, ranging from self-care and wrestling to local waterways and music. He explained that all hosts are volunteers, and the station operates with only two paid employees working less than 10 hours per week.
