There has been some internal debate within the Congress party regarding the effectiveness of highlighting the gold smuggling case as a central campaign theme. The discussion stemmed from allegations made by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) linking Adur Prakash, a United Democratic Front convener, to Unnikrishnan Potty. The allegations surfaced as Prakash sought the party’s nomination for the Konni seat, leading to speculation that the opposition would leverage the Sabarimala issue as a defensive tactic.
Ramesh Chennithala, head of the United Democratic Front’s campaign team, stated that 90 percent of those arrested in connection with the case were released due to collusion between the government and the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
