A Dutch consumer advocacy group is escalating its dispute with Wonderbox NL, a provider of experience vouchers, alleging misleading marketing and difficult redemption practices. The Consumer Association has announced its intention to pursue legal action, citing complaints from 150 customers regarding hidden fees, limited availability of advertised experiences, and vouchers that expire before use. The dispute highlights growing concerns about the terms and conditions attached to gift experiences and the potential for consumer disappointment.

The Consumer Association is preparing to take legal action against a gift and experience provider, alleging misleading practices. The dispute centers around experience vouchers offered by Wonderbox NL, which are intended for offerings such as hotel stays, spa visits, or afternoon tea.

According to the Consumer Association, redeeming the vouchers is difficult, the number of participating businesses is significantly lower than advertised, and various conditions or fees apply when using the experience vouchers.

“Sometimes you only receive a discount instead of an overnight stay,” says Babs van der Staak of the consumer organization. “This also applies to dinners. Or it states: ‘you can redeem this voucher at 700 hotels,’ but dozens are in the Netherlands and many more in Southern Europe. But no one is going to Southern Europe for a one-night stay.”

These types of conditions lead to additional costs for consumers who often received the vouchers as gifts. Alternatively, the vouchers go unused, expiring before they can be redeemed.

Complaints

The association reports that 150 consumers have filed complaints against Wonderbox NL. These consumers are seeking refunds or reimbursement for extra costs incurred. They also want a wider range of options and a more transparent website.

Van der Staak stated that prior contact with Wonderbox NL resulted in the company agreeing to remove certain vouchers from sale. However, the association believes this is insufficient, arguing that many experience vouchers remain available for purchase despite not delivering on Wonderbox NL’s promises.

As a result, the Consumer Association has decided to send a formal notice of intent to sue to the company. The association also seeks a dialogue with Wonderbox NL to find a solution for affected consumers. If no resolution is reached, the association will initiate legal proceedings.

‘Don’t Buy Experience Vouchers’

The association advises consumers to refrain from purchasing Wonderbox NL experience vouchers for the time being, and instead opt for giving cash as gifts. “Money doesn’t lose its value, it can be spent at any store, and there are no restrictions,” Van der Staak added.

Wonderbox NL released a statement to the press expressing disappointment with the Consumer Association’s public stance. The company claims that “good discussions” were held with the association and that it has been “open and receptive to learning.” “Over the past year, we have implemented significant and demonstrable changes to create more transparency and meet the expectations of our Consumer Association.”

The company declined to comment on the potential legal action and stated it will await the formal notice of intent.
