Coquimbo Unido defeated La Serena 1-0 in a heated regional clash, thanks to a lone goal from Alejandro Camargo amidst controversial refereeing decisions.

The League Primera match, played on February 14, 2026, at La Serena’s Estadio La Portada, was played in front of a crowd of over six thousand local fans.

Camargo broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, heading home a cross from Benjamín Chandía with no opposition, beating goalkeeper Federico Lanzillota.

However, La Serena thought they had scored earlier in the match when Felipe Chamorro found the back of the net, only to notice the goal disallowed by referee Cristián Garay.

The controversy stemmed from a challenge where La Serena’s player appeared to score whereas the goalkeeper, Diego Sánchez, was down injured after handling the ball. Sánchez remained on the ground, claiming a knock, as Chamorro slotted home.

Following a review by VAR official Rodrigo Carvajal, Garay ultimately overturned the goal, with replays showing the player didn’t have full control of the ball and the contact wasn’t clearly defined.

Further adding to the drama, La Serena’s Yahir Salazar received a red card following a decision made by both the central referee and VAR. Salazar made contact with an opponent after touching the ball, a challenge deemed worthy of a sending-off.

The victory lifts Coquimbo to 6 points and into third place in the League Primera standings.

La Serena, meanwhile, suffers their second defeat in three matches, leaving them with just one point and in 14th place – second to last – in the league table. The result leaves them facing an uphill battle early in the championship.
