A Córdoba, Argentina police officer died Thursday night after being shot during a confusing incident at a home in the Villa Belgrano neighborhood. The death of the officer, identified as Luis Azabal, has prompted a homicide investigation and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Luis Azabal, 54, was part of a police team responding to a reported burglary at a residence on Neper Street around 9 p.m. Local time, according to reports. Upon arrival, officers found the front door of the home open.
Investigators believe the homeowner discharged a firearm, mistakenly identifying Azabal as one of the intruders. The bullet struck the officer in the left clavicle, causing a severe injury. He was immediately transported to Allende Sanatorium, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of the wound.
Police have detained the homeowner, who is now facing charges of aggravated homicide with a firearm. The case is being investigated by prosecutor Jorgelina Gutiez of District Four, Turn Six.

The tragic incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences for the fallen officer. Azabal had served with the police force for 23 years and was described by colleagues as an exemplary officer and person.
